Mano Khalil | feature film | 2021 | 124 min | Kurdish with English subtitles

In a Kurdish-Syrian border village in the early 1980s, Sero goes to school for the first time. A new teacher arrives from the capital to transform these Kurdish children into Pan-Arab model students. To bring this earthly paradise closer, he uses the stick to banish Kurdish, grotesque veneration of Assad, and hatred against the Zionist enemy—the Jews. Sero is confused because his dearest neighbors are a loving Jewish family. For years, his family has lit their lights on the Sabbath. In this oppressive authoritarian world, everyone is oppressed, and both staying and leaving are huge risks. For this film, the director drew from his own experiences, creating a connection from the past to the present.

Director Mano Khalil will attend the screening for a Q&A session with our colleagues from the Amsterdam Kurdish Film Festival (AKFF).
AKFF takes place from May 10-12 at Het Ketelhuis.
