On the eve of Yom HaZikaron and in the shadow of the Nakba, we gather at Makom to watch the 21st Joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Ceremony live — together, in Amsterdam.

Organized by Combatants for Peace and the Parents Circle – Families Forum, this ceremony brings bereaved Israeli and Palestinian families into the same space to mourn. The dead are not equal in number. The scale of Palestinian loss — in Gaza, across the West Bank, through decades of occupation, displacement and ethnic cleansing — is staggering. Israeli grief is also real. We are here to bear witness to all of it, without flattening what is not equal and without looking away.

This ceremony does not offer comfort. It insists that mourning together — across the lines that usually keep us from seeing each other’s dead — is itself a form of resistance to the logic of endless war. The tagline for this joint ceremony is: We are the day after. As Jews living in the diaspora we want to bear witness to the vision of the day after.
