A Yiddish lament on the displacement and marginality of a refugee family in Brussels.

BRUXELLES-TRANSIT tells the story of the parents of director Samy Szlingerbaum. After a ten-day train journey, the couple arrived in Belgium in 1947. Two years later, Samy was born. Szlingerbaum’s mother speaks, unseen, in Yiddish about her postwar journey: the family’s attempts to find a home, their search for work in illegality, and their efforts to integrate into their country of exile, without papers or any knowledge of the language. In collaboration with Boris Lehman and Chantal Akerman, Szlingerbaum portrayed these experiences in a solemn, poetic manner. Through anonymous, long shots of trains, houses, and streets, filmed around the notorious Brussels-Midi station, Szlingerbaum pays tribute to the dreams and memories of refugees, Jewish or not.
