Bedrock is a documentary by Kinga Michalska that traces a psychological and poetic journey through contemporary Poland, specifically, through places where the Holocaust unfolded and whose histories remain embedded in the earth itself.
The film follows individuals and communities living on or near former sites of violence. Through a set of vignettes, Bedrock shows how the past lives on within everyday life: a young girl visits a friend in a psychiatric hospital once used as a concentration camp; a Polish Jew dedicates himself to the task of recovering and preserving the scattered remains of Holocaust victims; a Catholic family confronts questions of national complicity as their town prepares for a wartime commemoration.
Bedrock illuminates the emotional complexity and moral paradoxes of inhabiting such landscapes through these encounters. Memory and trauma linger in everyday life and conversations, instead of being confined to past history.
