4 May - Remembrance day

Once again, Oy Vey and Kriterion join forces to commemorate May 4 (Dutch remembrance day for WWII) and celebrate May 5 (liberation day) at the historic location of Kriterion, through Jewish rituals, customs and stories. We combine Jewish film, discussion and ritual to make sense of these days.

On May 4, we will organize the Oy Vey commemoration in the foyer of Kriterion.

We try to connect with our ancestors by reflecting on the customs, stories and rituals that we share. In this way, we draw a line through our history to the present. It is not without reason that the English word “remembering” comes from “re – membering”: gathering your limbs together, and becoming whole again through commemoration.

We commemorate in order to orient ourselves in time, in relation to the past and to root ourselves into the present. What we do today matters. And it matters so much today.

Just like last year, this commemoration will be a combination of Jewish ritual (tearing of a cloth, saying the kaddish – both traditionally done in times of mourning), stories, music, song and silence.
