Nesjomme (Sandra Beerend, 2024, 88 minutes, Dutch spoken with English subtitles)

Nesjomme follows the story of Rusha, a young Jewish woman in Amsterdam during the interwar period. Through letters to her brother Max, who emigrated to the Dutch East Indies, we gain an intimate insight into life in the Jewish quarter. The film combines authentic archival footage with her personal testimonies, revealing the rich contribution of the Jewish community to the cultural and economic fabric of Amsterdam. From the pride of diamond cutters to the energy of popular cabaret performers, and from social reformers to iconic entrepreneurs – Nesjomme is both a vivid portrait of a lost era and a tribute to the ‘Jewish soul’ of the city: the ‘nesjomme’.
The film will be introduced (in English) by Oy Vey and we will organize a conversation after the film.
Freedom soup and music in the foyer
After the screening of Nesjomme, Kriterion will serve Ribolita soup (for free) for neighbours, friends, friends of friends, anyone who wants to celebrate 80 years of freedom with us.
The soup is served between 18:00 and 20:00 and we will be accompanied by “ORGANIC”, an organ trio ensemble. They will take us (between 18:00 and 20:00) into a colorful excursion of songs we love, songs we might remember, and tunes we can’t forget. As they say themselves: “The band makes a VELVET sound.Soulbop, hardbop, folkbop, bipboop.
And most importantly, THE BLUES”.
