Leandro Koch & Paloma Schachmann | documentaire | 2023
115 min | Yiddish, English, Spanish, and German spoken with English subtitles

Argentinian filmmaker Leandro Koch has no interest in his Jewish background until he falls in love with clarinetist Paloma Schachmann. She specializes in the traditional Yiddish wedding music of Eastern Europe, known as klezmer. This marks the beginning of a search for the last European practitioners of the genre. Their journey through countries such as Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova yields little. Jewish presence has faded to old photos and painful memories. However, the klezmer tradition has survived time in a different way. Many local musicians incorporate it into their repertoire. Thus, The Klezmer Project is both a requiem and a rediscovery.

The film was shown at IDFA in 2023.
