Share your story: Oy Vey and Gedeelde Geschiedenissen Amsterdam

Oy Vey is part of a really interesting project: Gedeelde Geschiedenissen Amsterdam. It’s in cooperation with the Amsterdam Museum, OBA (the Amsterdam Public Library), Moslim Archief, The Black Archives, and PAC (Pan-Asian Collective). Together, we are collecting, archiving, and sharing the stories of our communities.

Oy Vey is gathering stories from individuals at the crossroads of Jewish life and the Netherlands, with an initial focus on combinations that are not the norm in our society. We are seeking out people who can share stories about language, intersectional backgrounds (i.e., Asian and Jewish, Black and Jewish, Jews from predominantly Arabic speaking regions… you get the idea, right?).  Some of the topics we will be investigating include migration, community, home, objects that tie one to past generations – or the lack of those objects and what that means. Our objective is to learn and share more about the experiences and cultures of Jewish people in the Netherlands who come from backgrounds that are not considered normal here. 

If you’ve ever experienced people assuming that you’re not “really Dutch” or you’re not “really Jewish” then this call may be for you.

Participation means sharing a bit about yourself and your story. Some of the interviews will be filmed and/or audio recorded to be shared in public and in archives. If you have an interesting story you want to share, but don’t want to share your identity, we can find ways to make that work.
