What’s up in Jewish Amsterdam? Oy Vey has the scoop.
Hi all,
I couldn’t help but think of what resistance means and what it costs. I am sure I am not alone. I have been reading Helen Rappaport’s book Caught in a Revolution and was struck by a comment from a friend of Lenin’s: “There are two things that people only appreciate when they have lost them, and these are their health and their country.” (BTW, it’s a really good read.)
We’re an international crowd. Chances are many of us are anxious about one or both of these things. Worried about family, friends, the future…
But we resist. Somehow. Some way. To be Jewish is to resist, after all. It’s to resist disappearing into the general society (for those who can). To resist normalcy. To resist erasure.
Oy Vey makes that resistance more fun. At least for me. And the coming months are filled with opportunities for gathering together. To remind ourselves that we are part of a community.

Save the dates for the Oy Vey Film Festival!
From February 26 through March 1: renew your Cineville card! Oy Vey is coming at the end of February with the long-awaited second edition of the Oy Vey film festival. Soon we’ll tell you more about this edition’s theme and the line-up. On Thursday evening February 26, we’re celebrating the opening with a gem of a film in the main hall of the Kriterion cinema in Amsterdam – and you can be there! Keep the evening free in your calendar, and leave your name and email address here – then you’ll be the first to get a message from us when ticket sales open. We can’t wait!
1 Feb – Tu B’Shvat Cabaret*
We’re still hard at work getting our new Oy Vey Jewish living room ready to open, but you can already come take a sneak peek during our Tu B’Shvat with a cabaret in honor of the new year of the trees. Dress up as a tree, bring a picnic basket and enjoy improvisation, music and more!

Nakba/Independence. Two sides of the same coin. On the 22 of February, Oy Vey’s resident philosopher will guide a face-to-face discussion on the early days of the Israeli state and the impact on the non-Jewish Palestinians who lived there.
First timers welcome! 22 March – What’s Actually Happening Inside Israel?
Join our favorite philosopher Yoni Busquila for a discussion on what’s going on behind the headlines in Israel. Even though this discussion is part of a series, first-timers are welcome.
27th March – Walk with Oy Vey and learn about Jewish resistance in Amsterdam
Friday afternoon, Amsterdam city center
Join Oy Vey for a walk featuring sites of Jewish resistance. Instead of talking about Dutch (non-Jewish) resistance and Jewish victims, we will discover and commemorate brave acts of Jewish resistance in Amsterdam! This year’s walk will include an extra stop at the ‘Bevolkingsregister’, including personal reflections on and by the family of Frieda Belinfante. It’s not too late to make Oy Vey’s dreams come true!
The new Oy Vey Living Room is real folks. We’re so excited! Since we signed our contract and got the keys three weeks ago, we’ve been working hard with volunteers to make the space as ready for use as possible.In Boaz’s words: ‘Hammering in Mokum. Sometimes with gentle hands, then again with powerful swings. We leveled walls, tore down workbenches, and installed the underfloor heating. After a break to let the floor dry, we’re moving on to preparing the high walls to be painted.’
And while we’re working on our new home and making a rich programming of events and gatherings possible, you can help us reach our fundraising goal of the crowdfunding campaign to be able to cover the rent on an ongoing basis. We’ve now passed 21,000 euros and still need 9,000 euros more for this year.
