Cheshvan - When we remind you about Oy Vey's upcoming events

The image is divided into six rectangles. There are hand -drawn numerology boards on the top right, followed by an eye in the middle, and a stylized cosmic sky. Below, there is the Joods Manifest logo, the name of the Hebrew month of Cheshvan, and the Oy Vey logo.

Oy Vey is a community of volunteers who organize Jewish events and activities in the Netherlands, including the Jewish Manifesto, which launches on 21 Nov 2024.

What happened to last month? Can someone find it for us, because we lost track of time? We have barely any of it left until the launch of the Jewish Manifesto on 21 November. Which reminds us, did you get your ticket yet? It’s not too late:

If you have a copy of the Ma’agal calendar, you’ll know it’s Cheshvan. It’s a month that marks the birth of the first woman to compete in an international motor race and other fascinating Jewish factoids.  If you don’t have a calendar yet, buy one here.

Events

For us at Oy Vey, this month has three events.

Deviant Yeshiva: Jews and Race

10 Nov, 18.30, The Hague and online

This coming Sunday, the final Deviant Yeshiva in the 3-part program will meet to discuss Jews and Race. It’s not too late to join the discussion.

Joods Manifestival

21 Nov, 19.30, Amsterdam

The second is – you guessed it – Het Joods Manifestival on the 21st of November. Have we mentioned that before? Because we’re pretty excited about it. Many of you were generous in your support of our successful crowdfunding campaign. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

For a little more than two years, Oy Vey held discussions with Jews in the Netherlands around topics like reparations, living in a non-Jewish world, and impostor syndrome. Those discussions influenced and informed the writing of a Manifesto, which Oy Vey will launch on the 21st of November. We would love to see you at the event, which will include music, spoken word, delicious snacks, and, of course, you!

Havdalah Reimagined

30 Nov, 19.15-21.30

To end the month, Tali and Lievnath will lead us in some much needed reflection and Jewish ritual to mark the end of Shabbat and the beginning of another week. Always moving and lovely, Havdalah Reimagined allows us time to pause in the feeling of Shabbat peace before we take on the world once again.

Jewish Language Project is Looking for Words!

This message is from Kyle Fingerhut, the lexicon manager for the Jewish Language Project (JLP).

Did your ancestors speak a Jewish heritage language such as Juhuri, Yiddish, Ladino, Judeo-Arabic, Bukharian, or Persian? The JLP, which preserves and promotes the use of Jewish languages, has a collection of online dictionaries which contain words from these heritage languages that are used in the native languages of modern Jews. One of the dictionaries is the Jewish English Lexicon, but we also have French, Swedish, German, and more. We’ll even have Dutch soon!

Even if you don’t speak a heritage language such as Yiddish, there may be heritage words that have been passed down and used in your English or Dutch. For example, Jews with ancestors who spoke Yiddish might use “neshome” instead of “soul” in their English or Dutch.

If you or your family use any such heritage words in your English, Dutch, or any other native language for which we have a dictionary, please visit the website for this project to find instructions on how to add them to our dictionaries. https://www.jewishlanguages.org/heirloom#heritage-words

If there are heritage words that you use in Dutch that you’d like to add, feel free to submit them at this link since that dictionary has not been opened yet:  Add words

If you don’t have any heritage words to add, check out the other tracks of our new project Heirloom. Track two allows you to engage in language activism, while track three pairs you up with an endangered Jewish language speaker who passes on their language to you. https://www.jewishlanguages.org/heirloom

And always feel free to browse our dictionaries to learn more Jewish words and add your own!  https://jel.jewish-languages.org/

P.S.

Is the Manifestival on your agenda? Because it’s on the 21st of November, starting at 19.30.
