"We Need to Talk" - Kislev Newsletter
Oy Vey organizes Jewish events in Amsterdam, The Hague, and other locations in the Netherlands. See what’s in store for the coming weeks as we dive into Kislev, 2024.
Just look at the beautiful Mirjam van Dam beaming from her perch at the piano. It was such a pleasure to hear her voice belting out Yiddish songs during the Jewish Manifestival. We’ll write more about the festival soon, acknowledging all the hard work that went into it.
Until then, you can listen to and read the manifesto online at joodsmanifest.nl. It’s available in English and Dutch.
Read on! The coming weeks are filled with opportunities to connect, explore, and get creative. So, we hope to see some of you with us.
Love and solidarity to all of you.
Coming Up
Sun. Dec 8: Deviant Yeshiva: Wayward Reflections for Our Time
Guided by researcher Yonathan Busquila Listik and artist Hannah Dawn Henderson, this edition of the Deviant Yeshiva will examine archival items from the National Collection of Architecture and Urban Planning through the prism of Jacque Derrida’s Archive Fever. You are all welcome to join them at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam this coming Sunday.
Sat. Dec 14: Complex Jewish feelings in Mokum: zine-making as a creative expression of complexity
Join us Saturday December 14th between 10:00 and 15:30 for a Jewish zine-making practice. We will start with speaking and sharing about our experiences in the city, specifically in the light of the times after the Hamas attack on October 7th 2023 and the ongoing war on Gaza which unfolded straight after. In the afternoon, we will work graphically and play with words and images with our friends at Studio Schreefloos in Amsterdam to create our own zine: a DIY, self-published, small-circulation publication
Thurs. Dec 19: “We need to talk”
Join us Thursday December 19th between 19:30 at Pakhuis de Zwijger when we will be expanding on the launch of the Jewish Manifesto with a rousing discussion of what it means to be Jewish in a non-Jewish world. There will be musical flourishes from Benjamin Fro and Fan Club Nothing, snacks from around the Jewish diaspora provided by the amazing Irene Beukers, and an engaging exchange of ideas with lots of input from those of you who join us.
A plus! We will be testing out our Jewish diaspora discussion game. So, even if you don’t speak that much Dutch you can participate in the discussion.
Details coming soon
Save the date! 2 January, we will be celebrating Chanukah somewhere…
We want to hear from you!
