Door Tori Egherman

Greetings Earthlings! Oy Vey has Jewish events for people in the Netherlands. Read on to find out what the coming weeks have in store for us.

The longest day of the year is behind us, which means summer has begun. Cucumber time is upon us, which is why this month’s recipe is for kosher dill pickles.
How do we greet the summer? Oy Vey is trying an experiment. It’s a day Shabbat chill for all ages. It begins with Deviant Yeshiva discussion on Diaspora and ends with a Havdalah ceremony. Read on for more information.

What’s Coming Up?

The Oy Vey Oneg Shabbat Experiment

The Oy Vey Oneg Shabbat Experiment 20 July

Oneg Shabbat refers to the enjoyment of Shabbat. This is an experiment for us at Oy Vey. We’re inviting you to join us in a leisurely afternoon together that will extend all the way until sundown.

Spend the 20th of July with Oy Vey! For those of you who want to explore the idea of Diaspora, our resident philosopher Yoni Busquilla will be leading a discussion on the topic in the afternoon, starting at 14.30. At 17.00, we will have an all ages workshop on Havdalah (with snacks for kids). At 19.00 we will have a potluck dinner. The evening will close with a Havdalah ceremony. You can sign up for the whole day or for any part of it.

20 July Deviant Yeshiva

In the afternoon, we will explore ideas of Diaspora — galut, which refers to Jewish presence outside the holy land. What does this even mean? Is it the same as exile? Is Diaspora bad? Good? Indifferent?

Yona Busquilla will lead the discussion. It should be fun and engaging, and a great way to spend a Shabbat afternoon.

20 July Havdalah Potluck Dinner +

Check out Oy Vey’s first Havdalah potluck dinner. We’re starting early on Saturday, 20 July to welcome families and children. We will begin with an activity at around 17:15 and do a children’s havdalah ceremony. For those who’d rather come later – we will be around until around 22.30. At about 21.50 we will be enjoying the official Havdalah ceremony.

The Oy Vey Recipe

If you love pickles and miss Kosher dill pickles in the Netherlands, this recipe is for you. It is for a liter jar of pickles. You can easily scale up.

Make sure your jars are sterilized. Clean them really well before starting.

Ingredients

  • Enough small pickles to fill the jar (this really depends on the size)
  • 1 tablespoon Kosher salt or sea salt (44 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon dill seed (44 ml) or 2 sprigs of fresh dill.
  • A few peppercorns (around 7)
  • 2-3 peeled garlic cloves
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • Optional: some coriander seeds (around 7), a chili pepper

Directions

  1. Boil the water and vinegar
  2. Make sure your jar is hot so that it doesn’t get shocked when you pour the hot water-vinegar mixture in
  3. Put the salt, dill seed or dill sprigs, peeled garlic, peppercorns, and optional ingredients into the bottom of a very clean jar
  4. Cut the cucumbers in half lengthwise and fill the jar with them
  5. Pour the hot water and vinegar mixture into the jar, leaving about a centimeter of space at the top.
  6. Dry the rim of the jar and seal

Keep in a cool dark place or in the fridge.

You can eat these pickles as early as the following day if you like “new pickles” or wait until they have been sitting for 7 days for a stronger flavor. If you are a serious pickle-fan, you can keep these in a cool dark place for a year. If you do that, be extra careful that the lid is on tight.
