Coming up soon in May and June
Oy Vey hosts Jewish events in Amsterdam and beyond that are welcoming and warm.
You might have noticed by the sliver of the moon that it’s the beginning of a Jewish month: Iyar. And for no particular reason, other than a similarity of words, we are reminded of the Very Sad Donkey, Eeyore.
On a birthday Eeyore thought would pass unnoticed, Piglet brought him a burst balloon and Pooh brought him an empty honey pot that he rebranded as a Useful Pot. And that was all it took to bring joy to Eeyore’s day, just the knowledge that his friends were thinking of him.
Film Festival Update
Here we are, making joy out of community. Like the Oy Vey Film Festival. Over 1000 people attended the films over the 4 days. Several screenings sold out. The film De Moeder van Mijn Moeder is Joods by Oy Veyer Eden Golderg, had to be moved into a bigger theater to accommodate the demand.
We also marked the memorial on May 4th around the 2-minutes of silence with music, storytelling, and ritual. It felt meaningful and beautiful to be together, Jewish, and vulnerable.
A big shout out to the team that made it possible: Lievnath Faber, Charley Spaan, Eden Goldberg, Merav Krone, and Lilit Zeltsburg and all the others who donated their time over the weekend.

May Shabbat Potluck Dinner
This coming Friday, 17 May, we’re meeting for a casual, low-key Shabbat Potluck in Amsterdam. Please join us.
Queer Shabbat
On 14 June, we’ll be hosting a queer Shabbat dinner to commemorate Jacob Israël de Haan. De Haan was a Dutch Jewish queer poet and writer who was killed in Palestine in 1924 and in June 2024 his life is celebrated with a string of events. We don’t have a lot of details, but you can pre-register for the Shabbat dinner on our website.
Are you wondering if you are welcome?

FFS Storytelling Evening at Pakhuis de Zwijger
May is a month of five Fridays, which means the Fifth Friday Sisterhood will be at Pakhuis with some true stories, for f*ck’s sake.
FFS is not entertainment. It’s a temporary nation in the middle of nowhere, ‘beyond ideas of wrong and right’, where people share stories for the first time or the thousandth time. The May event looks at the way borders have impacted our lives and features more than one member of Oy Vey.
There will be a workshop before the event at 17.00 at Pakhuis de Zwijger. Write to Manjit Krishna Kaur at stellascopesirens@gmail.com to register for the workshop.
LOCATION: Pakhuis de Zwijger
DATE: 31 May
TIME: 19.30 Doors open, 20.00 Stories begin
